"There's this notion floating around that getting a book published is like winning a lottery, that writers would be writing as a hobby whether they were being published or not, but if they happened to get published, then lucky, lucky them and they should be grateful. I don't see this. I see people in publishing with a regular income, job security and health benefits and wonder how it can be that the people on whose work everyone else's liveliehood depends aren't able to make a living on it themselves."
