The difference between writing in Brooklyn and writing in Toronto

Much talk in the lit community about this article. My teacher at school called it garbage, but I think there are a lot of truths in it, despite it being necessarily divisive and over simplified and note entirely a new arguement. I certainly agree with this statement, though:

"The danger is that the Giller, like the CBC, will become just another institution for boomer self-congratulation. Theirs is the greatest generation in the history of the country at inventing awards to give one other."

The article reminds me of Steven Henighan's blistering assessment (http://www.geist.com/opinion/kingmakers) of the Gillers for Geist.

If I want to get anywhere, I think I will set all of my stories in a wintery forest! Or the Canadian Shield.
